CASE STUDY 2
ROSIE DENNIS, FRAUDULENT BEHAVIOUR

THIS FIRST ENTRY has been a long time coming. Upon reflection I realise that I have been avoiding this wiki page, partly due to time constraints and partly due to my own inability to just start. For me it’s the beginning and the end that are the trickiest parts to any process. So today marks the start of this Fraudulent Behaviour (working title) wiki page.

I have made the links BOLD and BLUE.

The work is largely about my interest in deception of ourselves and others on a small scale – not the kind that makes front page news but the small lies that we rarely even question and often accept as normal. The lies that are socially sanctioned and taken for granted. The lies that have become habitual responses – that beat the truth each and every time. The lies that help us cope in difficult situations – to protect ourselves, our ego and to protect others. The lies that make life easier.

The work is also about story telling and substituting or changing ‘facts’ to make a story to more interesting and exciting and how omitting facts can change the narrative completely – making things seem not as they are.

The process of making the show began in April of this year at Arnolfini. It was a concentrated burst of 2 weeks in the dark studio that culminated in a showing/presentation of ideas. The process of showing ‘material’ at such an early stage in the process was quite foreign to me, however the audience were very generous and the experience was useful. Having to ‘produce’ something during the two weeks was a good motivation to start.

I have uploaded a few responses to the presentation.

I arrived back in Sydney in June and headed to Australian artist Arthur Boyd’s property, Bundanon, about 2 and half hours south of Sydney for a week. It was an amazing place to arrive home to; kangaroos, wombats and lots of wide-open space. I mainly worked on the design of the show in my studio and allowed the landscape to wash over me in the hope that it would infiltrate the final work.

Since arriving back from Bundanon (about 4-weeks ago) I have been attempting to settle back into life in Sydney. I am working out of the kitchen (it’s the warmest place in the house) and due to present a work-in-progress at the LiveWorks festival at Performance Space in 4-weeks.
